About Us
The traditional methods section of a research article is often brief and incomplete, making it difficult to replicate experiments without extensive troubleshooting.
Bio-protocol, launched in 2011 by a group of Stanford postdoctoral researchers, aims to solve this issue with the Bio-protocol journal, an online peer-reviewed protocol journal curating and hosting high quality, free access, step-by-step protocols across the life sciences.
The Bio-protocol journal is published by Bio-protocol LLC, which is registered in California, USA.
We strongly support transparency and believe that direct communication about methods among scientists improves research reproducibility. For this reason, we have expanded our scope beyond the Bio-protocol journal to launch Bio-protocol Preprint Repository, Bio-protocol Exchange, and Bio-protocol Webinars—for sharing protocols, exchanging ideas, and discussing cutting-edge life science technologies.
Our vision – improving reproducibility
Sharing detailed methods and fostering direct communication among researchers will improve reproducibility and accelerate discovery.
Who we are – passionate early-career researchers
Bio-protocol is a "grassroots" organization with editorial and review boards primarily comprised of postdocs, early career faculty members, and staff scientists. At this stage in their careers, they actively and routinely design, conduct, and supervise experiments, with a broad expertise to ensure the quality and clarity of the published/posted contents.
Where we are going – revolutionizing the way researchers communicate
Bio-protocol provides not just a database of reliable protocols for researchers everywhere, but also a community platform to share ideas and promote good research practices. We hope that our protocols will serve as anchor points for our authors and users to form vibrant networks, which will benefit everyone involved. Our ultimate goal is to improve reproducibility and accelerate the research process.
How we thrive – working towards a sustainable business model
After a decade of publishing without charging fees to authors, thanks to the financial support of its passionate founders, Bio-protocol introduced an Article Processing Charge (APC) of $1,200 for protocol articles submitted on or after March 1, 2023, to support a more stable business model.
